Plymouth Gin Distillery

"There is a lot of science there, but as soon as it hits the spirit still, there's a bucketful of art." So says Master Distiller Sean Harrison and, as the current curator of the 200-year old recipe for Plymouth Gin, he should know.

Wylam Brewery

Having reached its 10th birthday in 2010, Wylam's beers are a regular fixture around the country. Taking Wylam's most famous son – George Stephenson – and his ground-breaking invention, the Rocket steam locomotive, as the inspiration for both the logo and a number of its key beers, it is perhaps fitting that Rocket is one of its most awarded brews.

5 August 2011 - 3:00pm - 7 August 2011 - 6:00pm

The tenth annual Whisky Fringe takes place in Edinburgh, from Friday 5 to Sunday 7 August.

Adnams First Rate Finest Cut Gin

Adnams First Rate certainly is first rate. Best known for its beers, chairman Jonathan Adnams – also a brewing engineer – got inspired by the craft distilling scene in the US, deciding to convert the family firm's orginal brewhouse into a distillery.

£24.99/50cl; Adnams website, Cellar & Kitchen stores, some Adnams tied pubs & free trade pubs

For more on the story of the distillery's birth, see here.

Chase Vodka

Chase Vodka beat off 100s of other contenders to scoop the World's Best Vodka title at the prestigious San Francisco Spirits Competition in 2010. But then, this Herefordshire spirit has been a bit of a head-turner from the start.

RRP: £33/70cl; Waitrose, Fortnum & Mason, Selfridges & leading bars
