Lagavulin 16 Year Old

Lagavulin distillery from the sea shoreHeavy, even oily, and powerfully peated, Lagavulin 16 Year Old is a whisky which attracts devoted followers. The robust palate and long woodsmoke finish makes it a great cold weather dram.

In the past, before single malts became widely popular, Lagavulin was an important part of the White Horse blend, but these days it is prized more for its own unique flavours.

The distillery stands on the Southern shore of Islay just a couple of miles from its neighbours Ardbeg and Laphroaig. All three experience the same Atlantic storms, all three are heavily peated whiskies, yet all three are very different.

Lagavulin 16 Year Old announces itself as soon as the bottle is opened - even before pouring the pungent peat smoke fills the room, along with a heavy aromatic sweetness.

On the palate there are huge flavours of woodsmoke, salt, honey, and ginger, all wrapped up in Lagavulin's signature oily texture, a delicious, satisfying mouthfeel which gives way to a long, smoky, briney finish.

43%/70cl, around £47, widely available.
